Why Your Hyundai EV Chews Through Tires Faster Than a Gas Car

If you traded a Sonata or Elantra for an IONIQ 5 last year and just noticed your tires are looking tired at 22,000 miles, you're not imagining things. Electric vehicles wear tires faster than gas cars — sometimes noticeably faster — and there are honest, mechanical reasons why. Here's what's actually happening under your EV and what you can do about it before your next Cleveland County road trip.

Why EVs Are Harder on Tires

Three things about an electric Hyundai make tires wear quicker than the gas car you probably came from. None of them are a defect. They're just physics.

First, weight. An IONIQ 5 carries a battery pack that adds roughly 1,000 pounds compared to a similar-size gas crossover. That extra mass presses down on every tire every mile, and it presses harder in corners and under braking. More load equals more friction equals more rubber left on the road.

Second, torque. Your gas Tucson builds power as the tach climbs. An EV delivers full torque the instant you touch the pedal. Even when you're driving gently, the motor is putting force to the pavement in a way a gas engine can't. Squirt away from a green light at Lindsey and Classen a few times a day and the front tires (on a rear-drive IONIQ 5) or all four (on the AWD version) feel it.

Third, regenerative braking. Instead of using brake pads to slow the car, an EV uses the motor to recapture energy. Great for range and for your brake pads — but the slowing force still has to travel through the tires. On a one-pedal drive down I-35 in stop-and-go, your tires are doing the work friction brakes used to share.

How Much Faster Are We Talking?

Real-world numbers from EV owners and independent tire testing suggest 20% to 30% shorter tread life is common versus a comparable gas vehicle on the same tires. A set that would go 50,000 miles on a Santa Fe might go 35,000 to 40,000 on an IONIQ 5 driven the same way. Drive it hard and that number drops further.

What You Can Actually Do About It

The good news: most of the wear problem is manageable with basic maintenance you'd do on any car — you just have to actually do it, and do it on schedule.

  • Rotate every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. This is the single biggest lever. EV torque wears the drive wheels faster, so rotating regularly evens things out and can add thousands of miles to the set. Our tire rotation service is quick and pairs well with a multi-point look-over.
  • Check alignment yearly, or after any hard pothole hit. Norman's roads are decent, but the stretch of Robinson east of I-35 and the shoulders on 9 have swallowed plenty of tires. A car that's out of alignment scrubs rubber sideways every mile. A four-wheel alignment is cheap insurance on a $1,200 set of EV tires.
  • Keep pressure where Hyundai says, not where the tire says. The number on the door jamb is what matters. Underinflation on a heavy EV is the fastest way to cook the shoulders of a tire and lose range at the same time.
  • Get a look at wear patterns twice a year. A multi-point inspection catches uneven wear early, when it can still be corrected by an alignment instead of by buying new tires.

Buy the Right Replacement Tire

When it's finally time for new tires, the temptation is to save $200 by buying whatever's on sale at the warehouse club. On an EV, that's usually a bad trade.

The tires that came on your IONIQ 5, Kona Electric, or IONIQ 6 are EV-specific for a reason. They use stiffer sidewalls to handle the weight, lower rolling resistance compound to protect range, and foam inserts to keep road noise out of the cabin (an EV has no engine to mask tire hum). Put a generic touring tire on and you'll feel the difference immediately: less range, more noise, and often shorter life anyway because the tire wasn't built for the load.

Stick with an EV-rated tire or a Hyundai-approved replacement. Ask us before you order — we'd rather point you to the right tire than fix a wrong one later.

What This Means for Total Cost of Ownership

Here's the honest math. You'll spend more on tires over five years of EV ownership than you would over five years of Elantra ownership — probably a few hundred dollars more per set, and possibly one extra set across the life of the car. That's real money and worth knowing before you sign.

What offsets it: no oil changes, no spark plugs, no transmission service, dramatically less brake wear thanks to regen, and electricity that costs a fraction of gasoline per mile. Most owners still come out well ahead on total cost of ownership. The tire bill just moves the savings around, it doesn't erase them. When to Bring It In

Bring your EV in for a tire check if you notice any of the following: a pull to one side on a flat stretch of highway, cupping or scalloped wear on the edges, vibration through the wheel above 55 mph, or tread depth under 4/32" on any tire. Oklahoma summer heat is hard on rubber, and a tire that's marginal in October can be dangerous by August.
