If you're eyeing a small camper for Lake Thunderbird weekends, a jet ski for Lake Texoma, or a utility trailer to haul mulch from the north side of Norman, the first question is always the same: which Hyundai can actually pull it without breaking a sweat? The answer depends on the model, the engine, and whether the vehicle left the factory with a tow prep package.
Here's a plain-English tour of what tows what across the current Hyundai lineup, plus what to look for on the window sticker before you sign.
Start With the Tongue Weight, Not the Brochure
Before we get into models, a quick reality check. Manufacturers publish a maximum tow rating, but that number assumes a properly equipped vehicle, a level trailer, and a driver who understands tongue weight (usually 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight). A 2,000-lb rating doesn't mean you can hitch anything under 2,000 lbs and go. It means the whole system — trailer, cargo, passengers, hitch — has to fit inside the vehicle's Gross Combined Weight Rating.
Oklahoma adds its own variables. August heat is hard on transmissions and cooling systems. I-35 headed to DFW has real grades once you get past the Arbuckles. And crosswinds on 412 out past Enid will remind you fast whether your trailer is loaded correctly. Rate your setup for the worst day, not the average one.
The Compact and Midsize SUVs: Tucson, Santa Fe, and Santa Cruz
For most Norman families, the towing conversation starts here.
Tucson
The gas Tucson is rated to tow up to 2,000 lbs when properly equipped. That's enough for a small pop-up camper, a pair of jet skis on a light trailer, or a 5x8 utility trailer with yard equipment. The Tucson Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid carry the same 2,000-lb ceiling. If your trailer plans are modest, the Tucson handles them without drama, and you keep the fuel economy that made you look at it in the first place.
Santa Fe
This is where things get more interesting. The redesigned Santa Fe, with its available turbocharged engine and properly equipped tow package, is rated up to 4,500 lbs. That opens the door to smaller travel trailers, a bass boat, or a two-horse bumper-pull. The Santa Fe Hybrid comes in lower at 2,000 lbs, so if towing is a priority, the gas turbo is the one to drive. If you're weighing hybrid trade-offs more broadly, our post on AWD vs. FWD in Oklahoma is worth reading alongside this one.
Santa Cruz
The Santa Cruz is the odd, useful one — a unibody pickup that behaves like an SUV. Properly equipped with the turbocharged engine and factory tow package, it's rated up to 5,000 lbs. That's real capability for a vehicle that still fits in a normal garage and drives like a Tucson. For the Norman homeowner who tows a couple weekends a month but doesn't want a full-size truck payment, the Santa Cruz has become the quiet answer. Take a look at what's in stock on our new inventory page and filter to Santa Cruz to see current tow-equipped configurations.
The Three-Row: Palisade
The Palisade is Hyundai's family-hauler flagship, and it tows up to 5,000 lbs when properly equipped with the factory tow package. That covers most travel trailers under 22 feet, a decent boat, or a car trailer for a project vehicle. Just as important as the number: the Palisade has the wheelbase, the cooling capacity, and the electronic trailer sway control to make 5,000 lbs feel manageable rather than white-knuckle.
If you're routinely towing near the max, look for a Palisade with the tow prep package from the factory. It typically includes upgraded cooling, a Class III hitch receiver, and the wiring harness for trailer lights and brakes. Adding those items aftermarket is possible but rarely cheaper.
Sedans, EVs, and the Ones That Aren't Meant for Towing
Not every Hyundai is built to tow, and pretending otherwise is how transmissions die young.
- Elantra, Sonata, Venue, Kona (gas): Not rated for towing in the U.S. market. If you need to move a small trailer occasionally, rent a truck or borrow a friend's Santa Cruz.
- IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6: The IONIQ 5 has a modest tow rating in some configurations, but towing dramatically shortens EV range — often by 40% or more. It's technically possible; it's rarely practical for Oklahoma distances.
- IONIQ 5 N: A performance EV, not a tow vehicle. Don't.
If you thought you needed to tow but really just need cargo space a few times a year, a Santa Fe or Palisade with the seats folded may solve the problem without a hitch at all.
What to Check on the Window Sticker
When you're standing in the lot at Norman Hyundai looking at two Santa Fes that look identical, here's how to tell which one is actually tow-ready:
- Factory tow package or tow prep: Listed on the Monroney sticker. This is the one that matters most.
- Hitch receiver installed: Look under the rear bumper. A dealer-added hitch is fine but confirm it's rated for the trailer weight you plan to pull.
- 7-pin or 4-pin wiring: A 4-pin handles lights only. A 7-pin adds electric trailer brakes, which most trailers over 3,000 lbs require.
- Transmission cooler: Often bundled with the tow package. Critical for August heat.
- Trailer brake controller pre-wiring: Saves headaches if you'll ever tow a braked trailer.
If any of these are missing on a vehicle you like, ask what it costs to add them before you commit. Sometimes it's simple; sometimes it changes the math.
Ownership Costs Beyond the Hitch
Towing puts extra load on brakes, tires, cooling, and fluids. Whichever Hyundai you land on, plan for slightly shorter service intervals if you tow regularly. Our service team can set up a maintenance rhythm that fits your usage — a multi-point inspection before trailer season and a transmission fluid exchange at the recommended interval will do more for long-term reliability than any aftermarket add-on.
